Over the years some 93,000
people have been implanted with DePuy's ASR hip system worldwide, medical
experts say. Those people who decided to undergo surgery are those suffering
from chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis on the hip. However, instead of
getting rid of the pain caused by the diseases, some patients complain that the device is
defective and some of them have filed several lawsuits to which the New Jersey
state court sets first
DePuy ASR hip Implant trial dates.
The DePuy ASR hip system was
designed in 2003 and developed in concurrence with skilled orthopedic surgeons
and leaders in the bio-medical field as an additional option for surgeons in
treating patients suffering from severe and disabling osteoarthritis and other
diseases of the hip joint.
Osteoarthritis is the most
common type of arthritis which has already affected 25 million people in the
United States. Normally, it is developed as people are ageing. It is more
common among the males.
Osteoarthritis commonly
affects the hands, feet, spine, and large weight-bearing joints, such as the
hips and knees. Osteoarthritis usually has no known cause and is referred to as
primary osteoarthritis.
In 2010, the DePuy
Orthopaedics, Inc. issued a voluntary recall over two of its devices --
the ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy
ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The ASR hip implant was recalled after receiving
new information from the National Joint Registry for England and Wales as part
of its on-going surveillance of post-market dates concerning it.
The usual concern of
the ASR hip implant
recipients’ is that it may be poisoning
their bodies because problems occur with such devices when friction between the
metal ball and cup causes minuscule metal filings to break off, which can seep
into the blood and cause inflammation, destroying muscle and bone.
There are also concerns that
the fragments could put the nervous system at risk of being slowly poisoned and
causing neurological disease.
Neurological diseases are
considered as disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout a
person’s body. Together they control all the workings of the body. When
something goes wrong with a part of a person’s nervous system, the
person may
experience trouble in moving, speaking, swallowing, breathing or
learning. The person may even suffer from having problems with the
memory, senses or
mood, according to Medline Plus website. No wonder several patients are
already
filing a DePuy hip
ASR lawsuit.
